MANAMA: Flashing green lights have so far been operated at 173 traffic signals to further regulate the flow of traffic countrywide.
The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry first started installing blinking green lights in May 2019, in co-ordination with the General Directorate of Traffic.
“Work is underway to instal an additional 32 blinking green lights as part of a plan to enhance road safety,” said Road Planning and Designing director Maha Khalifa Hamada.
The system works by adding a flashing green light for three seconds at the end of the actual green light to warn drivers before turning amber and then red.
According to the ministry, the system which was first activated in February 2019 has succeeded in reducing violations, based on results of a traffic study.
Flashing green lights have been installed at major avenues and different other arteries. These include mainly Khalifa Al Kabeer Highway-Airport Highway, Abdulrahman Al Fadhel Highway, King Faisal Highway, Shaikh Isa Highway, Zubara Avenue, Adliya Avenue, Muharraq Avenue, Humood Bin Sabah Highway and Bab Al Bahrain Avenue.
It won the smart traffic solutions award at the Smart Cities Conference 2020 in recognition of the successful introduction of the flashing green lights project in Bahrain.
