A FORUM that sheds light on the introduction of electric cars and the industry requirements is expected to be held in Bahrain.
Though no date has been fixed, Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA) president Dr Abdulhussain Al Mirza said the conference, ‘Electric Vehicles in Bahrain’, will attract regional and international speakers to discuss future opportunities and challenges.
Car dealers start importing electric cars from July.
“The local market is about to witness a quantum leap in the demand for electric vehicles,” said Dr Mirza.
“We have started screening applications for the import of electric vehicles through the kingdom’s Customs authority for commercial purposes.
“This is further supported by launching electric vehicle charging stations with multiple types of plugs.”
The first charging station for electric cars was opened last month in the Atrium Mall in Saar.
There are plans to set up similar stations across the country.
“These efforts will provide tremendous benefits to both consumers and suppliers in light of the current industrial boom in the field of car manufacturing powered by electricity,” said Dr Mirza.
“This kind of event details the kingdoms’ relentless endeavour to bolster clean and alternative energy sources to increase energy efficiency, and ensure the country meets its climate optimisation goals.”

Dr Mirza discussed the forum during a meeting with FinMark Communications managing director Zahraa Taher yesterday.
He added that Bahrain was on track to make the renewable energy sector one of the main pillars of the government’s plans for further economic diversification.
Industry, Commerce and Tourism Minister Zayed Alzayani, in a reply to a question by Parliament Speaker Fouzia Zainal in March, added that the ministry had started receiving applications for registration and compliance of electric car models in 2020.
