IT is heartening to note that Bahrain has achieved the highest drop in road fatalities (‘New traffic safety strategy pays off’, GDN, September 19). Lives of several innocent people have been saved as a result of the new traffic strategy.
However, instances of severe road rage in Bahrain have increased in the recent past which were rather rare in the past.
The other day, I witnessed a horrible instance of road rage when a hooligan driver tried to jump the queue to take an illegal left turn. An Asian family, along with all other law-abiding drivers like me, were patiently waiting in the queue for our turn to go left, and therefore did not let the hooligan driver jump the line.
The result? The Asian family was abused in the worst possible words and hand signs. While cursing the hooligan driver did not even consider that the Asian gentleman was with his wife and child.
I was wondering what wrong did the family do to suffer that abuse? I also wondered if the hooligan driver would have abused an Arab family the same way he did an Asian family?
Traffic authorities and we, as commuters, should help in tackling such kind of abusive behaviour on the roads so that the roads are safe for everyone as it is not always possible for people to register their complaints with the Traffic authorities against such behaviour.
Why are reckless drivers allowed to take a left turn at signals from the lane which is dedicated towards traffic going ahead? And how many innocent drivers are going to get abused on the roads for driving perfectly? I hope someone ‘up there’ takes note of this and ensures that everyone is equal before the law and we all have equal rights of dignity irrespective of our ethnic backgrounds.
