A BAHRAINI family of 16, including an elderly woman and a special needs teenager, was evacuated after their house in Jurdab collapsed due to heavy rains yesterday.
The old family house belonging to Najma Mohammed developed cracks on Saturday night and started falling in pieces over the weekend, prompting the Civil Defence to evacuate the residents.
According to MP Zainab Abdulamir, the roof of the house collapsed around 3pm – fortunately after all of the people had been safely evacuated.
“The female members of the family, including an elderly woman, a teenager with special needs, and an infant, have been relocated to the Dar Al Karama government shelter, while the men are awaiting government assistance for a shelter,” she told the GDN.
“In this old house, four families were living – the sons of Ms Mohammed and their families, including infants and children.
“As the rain fell heavily on Saturday morning, the house began to crumble, with bricks and blocks falling to the ground.
“The Civil Defence found the place unsafe yesterday and evacuated everyone – then the roof collapsed,” she explained.
The MP was there earlier in the day, along with senior officials from Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry.
“The women and girls were taken to the government shelter, but the men remain on the streets – they need apartments, and Housing Ministry officials have agreed to find a solution soon,” said the MP.
She went on to say that the family has been waiting for a government house since 2002.
“Their application is old, and they have been waiting for a house for 20 years – officials must find a solution to this issue, as well as many others on the long waiting list, soon.”
