A MEDICAL report is still awaited in the trial of a self-confessed drug addict who allegedly assaulted police officers at Bahrain International Airport (BIA) after he mistakenly thought they were kidnapping him.
The 30-year-old Bahraini is currently standing trial at the High Criminal Court on assault charges, as well as using hashish and methamphetamine, locally known as shabu.
A co-defendant, a 29-year-old Pakistani man, is also facing charges over the use of drugs and both defendants have been in custody since November 23 last year.
A defence lawyer previously said the 30-year-old suffered from a mental illness. Judges agreed to send the defendant to the Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation.
Judges adjourned the trial yesterday for a seventh time, until January 23, once again requesting that the medical report be brought to court.
According to his statement, the men were travelling through Muharraq when he suffered an attack of paranoia. He got out of the car and walked into the airport.
Court documents revealed that on witnessing the crowded concourse the 30-year-old became hysterical.
A teenage Bahraini officer working at BIA told the Public Prosecution that the man was also screaming. Officers sat him down and handcuffed him before he flew into a rage, the court heard.
Court documents revealed that while officers were trying to subdue him the 30-year-old continued to assault them for several minutes.
