A court has ordered a businessman to pay BD30,000 to his partner in connection with embezzlement.
The Bahraini, aged 44, is a co-partner in a private tourism company since 2019, according to court documents.
His partner, a fellow national, filed a case at the High Civil Court accusing him of pocketing the money after failing to purchase a boat, named ‘Princess Reham’ from Egypt, which they were going to use for their business.
The court initially ordered the 44-year-old to pay back his partner BD25,000.
However, lawyer Faisal Al Jamaan representing the plaintiff then lodged an appeal at the Supreme Civil Appeals Court, requesting an additional BD5,000, which the judges agreed to.
“The first degree court had initially ordered the businessman to pay BD25,000 to his business partner,” read the appeal court ruling.
“It rejected the payment of the BD5,000 saying that the cheque was written in the company’s name.
“However, the appeals court found out that the accused’s wife had received the cheque and had given it to her husband to purchase the boat.
“Therefore, he has now been ordered to pay BD30,000 which he took and did not end up buying the boat to use for tours.”
Mr Al Jamaan said that his client suffered great losses after his partner had pocketed the money. “My client owns 60 per cent of the business and his partner has 40pc shares,” he told the GDN.
“Their business was booming and they planned to purchase a boat to use for tours around the island.
“The plaintiff said that the business suffered losses due to his partner pocketing the money.
“The tourism sector had already suffered due to Covid-19 but this fraud had caused my client additional losses.”
