Work is underway to set up an inventory of thousands of artifacts at the at the Bahrain National Museum.
Antiquities and Museums Director Dr. Salman Al Mahari said that the overall number of artifacts has exceeded 30,000 to-date.
“The number of artifacts is increasing steadily as teams of archaeologists continue their excavation work in several sites in Bahrain”, he said.
He cited particularly the recent discoveries which were made in the area of Samaheej.
In a statement to Akhbar Al Khaleej, he said that the number of Bahraini archaeologists is currently almost non-existent.
“We find it difficult to provide Bahraini specialists to work in this vital field”, he said, stressing the importance of encouraging students to specialize in archaeology and held conserve national heritage.
Dr. Al Mahari made the statement marking the International Museums Day, annually observed on May 18.
The 2022 edition will be observed this year under the theme 'The Future of Museums: Recover and Imagine'.
