The Foreign Ministry has welcomed the decision of India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to suspend the party’s spokeswoman, stressing the need to denounce any reprehensible insults against Prophet Mohammed (PBUH), being a provocation to Muslims’ feelings and incitement to religious hatred.
The ministry underlined the importance of respecting all religious beliefs, symbols and personalities, and the concerted efforts of the international community to spread the values of moderation, tolerance and dialogue between religions and civilisations, and to confront extremist ideas that feed sedition and religious, sectarian or racial hatred.
Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Iran, the OIC and Pakistan also condemned the statement.
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry expressed its condemnation and affirmed its permanent refusal to touch the symbols of the Islamic religion, alongside all religious figures and symbols, according to state news agency SPA.
India’s ruling party BJP suspended its spokeswoman Nupur Sharma over her comments. The BJP said in a statement on its website that the party respected all religions. “The BJP strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities of any religion.”
The Saudi ministry also welcomed BJP’s measures and reiterated the kingdom’s position calling for respecting all beliefs and religions.
