MORE than 1,500 different types of birds will be showcased during an event to be held this weekend.
The inaugural Bahrain International Birds Show will be held at Al Ettifaq Sport Club in Duraz on Friday and Saturday.
Organised by the Bahrain Birds Society, the event will feature 187 participants from Germany, the UK, Mexico, the Netherlands, Belgium, India, Egypt and Gulf states.
“We are excited to host the first international birds show this year that will feature about 42 species and more than 200 different colours or size of birds,” society president Yousif Asfoor told the GDN.
“The event will feature hundreds of local breeders and would provide a platform to educate people about different birds.”
He said close to 4,000 visitors are expected to attend the two-day event which is open to the public.
Mr Asfoor said some of the birds that will be displayed are worth more than BD5,000 a pair, and rare species such as hyacinthine macaw could go above BD15,000 a pair.
He added that parrots, love birds, canaries, fancy pigeons and other unique birds will help visitors learn about them, and even allow them to touch or play with the feathered friend.
“We will have some parrots that visitors can pet and flying birds that respond to their names or trained to perform a certain action,” said Mr Asfoor.
To ensure the safety of the birds, Mr Asfoor added that vets will conduct checks on all birds, while additional measures are being taken by breeders bringing them from abroad for the show.
“We strongly feel that the show will educate the public on different bird species as every cage will have a banner explaining in detail about the species.
“There is a special section for children so they can take part in different activities.”
The show on Friday will be open from 4pm until 8pm, and on Saturday from 9am until 6pm.
