A Turkish medical worker’s quick thinking saved his own life after he successfully performed the Heimlich manoeuvre on himself.
CCTV footage shows Ilyas Yildir eating in his office when he begins to choke. With no one nearby to help, Yildir used a chair to perform the life-saving technique. He can be seen positioned behind the chair, lowering his body to strike his diaphragm against the back of the furniture repeatedly.
His perseverance and calm response paid off as he was able to dislodge the food stuck in his throat. The Heimlich manoeuvre is a first-aid procedure used to treat upper airway obstructions by applying abdominal thrusts to expel a foreign object.
