The Ministry of Interior of the State of Kuwait announced the foiling of a terrorist plot and the arrest of a network that had planned to carry out assassination operations targeting state figures and leaders, and to harm the country’s higher interests.
According to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Brigadier Nasser Buslaib, the Ministry of Interior’s spokesperson, said during a media briefing that the State Security Service, following meticulous surveillance and security monitoring, succeeded in thwarting the plot and arresting a network comprising five Kuwaiti citizens and one non-Kuwaiti individual whose citizenship had been revoked. He added that 14 fugitives abroad had also been identified, including five Kuwaiti citizens, five non-Kuwaiti individuals whose citizenship had been revoked, two Iranian nationals, and two Lebanese nationals.
Brigadier Buslaib explained that the accused were found to be linked to the banned terrorist organisation Hizbollah, and that the network had been planning to carry out assassination operations targeting state figures and leaders, as well as recruiting individuals to carry out these missions.
He added that the accused confessed to espionage, joining the terrorist organisation, and their readiness to carry out assigned tasks aimed at assassinating state figures and leaders and harming the country’s higher interests. They also admitted to receiving advanced military training abroad at the hands of members and leaders of the terrorist organisation, which included the use of weapons and explosives, surveillance methods, and assassination skills, in a manner that constitutes a grave act of treason against the nation and a blatant violation of loyalty and belonging.
Brigadier Buslaib noted that the accused have been referred to the Public Prosecution to take the necessary legal action against them, while security authorities continue their investigations to pursue all those proven to be linked to or cooperating with this cell or with any other terrorist organisations.
He added that the ministry of Interior affirms that the security, sovereignty, and national stability of the State of Kuwait are a firm principle that cannot be compromised or tolerated. He stressed that the actions carried out by this cell constitute a highly dangerous criminal act and amount to high treason against the nation, as they directly targeted the security, symbols, and leaders of Kuwait and sought to undermine its stability. He further emphasised that the security services will remain vigilant against anyone who attempts to compromise the country’s security or cooperate with terrorist organisations, and will take the strictest legal measures against all those proven to be involved, without leniency or exception.
The Ministry of Interior had earlier announced on 16 March the uncovering and arrest of a terrorist group affiliated with the banned Hezbollah organisation, comprising 14 Kuwaiti citizens and two Lebanese nationals, which aimed to destabilise the country and recruit individuals to join the terrorist organisation.
On March 18, the ministry also announced that the State Security Service had foiled a terrorist plot targeting vital installations in the country following intensive surveillance and investigations. Ten Kuwaiti citizens belonging to a terrorist group affiliated with the banned Hizbollah organisation were arrested. The group had engaged in prior planning and coordination with foreign entities and sought to communicate with them to provide the coordinates of the targeted sites, posing a direct threat to the country’s security.
