Bahrain’s fish markets saw a surge in supplies of safi, sheri and chanad on the eve of the seasonal fishing ban, which takes effect today, and runs through May 31.
Despite the ample availability, prices climbed noticeably.
Safi and sheri sold for between BD3.5 and BD4.5 per kilogram, while chanad averaged around BD3.5 per kilogram.
Traders attribute the increase to a spike in consumer demand ahead of the ban, as buyers moved to stock up or meet immediate needs.
Expectations of tighter supply over the two-month ban have also added upward pressure on prices.
