Bahraini poet Mubarak Al Amari was recently recognised as one of the top Arab cultural figures for 2026, as part of the celebration of the 12th annual Arab Poetry Day.
The Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (Alecso) honoured Mr Al Amari amongst the top poets across the Arab world on Arab Poetry Day, marked on March 21.
The selection was made by Alecso director-general Dr Mohamed Ould Amar, based on the recommendations of the Permanent Committee for Arab Culture and in implementation of decisions from the Conference of Arab Culture Ministers.
The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (Baca) noted the importance of such initiatives in strengthening the status of poetry and poets in the Arab world.
Alecso’s decision to honour a distinguished Bahraini figure like poet Mubarak Al Amari reflects a strong connection to national identity and the cultural depth of the Gulf region, according to Baca president Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.
Mr Al Amari was recognised for his pioneering role in enriching intellectual life in Bahrain and the Gulf, as well as his diverse societal contributions and projects.
Shaikh Khalifa congratulated Mr Al Amari on this recognition, noting that it crowns a distinguished career marked by dedication and achievement.
Mr Al Amari was born in Muharraq, where he developed a passion for literature, heritage, history, and the arts. He has been instrumental in documenting and writing about significant events and prominent figures across the Gulf, making his works essential references for researchers in Arab heritage studies.
The award-winning cultural figure’s work spans poetry, research and documentation. Among his most notable achievements is his book on the life of singer Mohammed bin Faris, which has become an important reference for those interested in traditional Bahraini music.
