CYCLING – LEANDER de Gendt claimed an impressive podium for Bahrain Victorious Development Team in the 77th Trofeo Piva one-day road race, held on Sunday in Italy.
The under-23 event, which is a part of the Union Cycliste International’s (UCI) Europe Tour, featured a course covering 179.8 kilometres in distance, starting and finishing in the commune of Col San Martino.
De Gendt claimed third place overall amongst the more than 170 riders who took part. The Belgian finished just five seconds behind winner Riccardo Lorello, who was competing on home soil for SC Padovani Polo Cherry Bank. He had a total finishing time of four hours 27 minutes and 40 seconds.
Tommaso Bambagioni, also from Italy, joined them in the top three for Team Technipes #inEmiliaRomagna Caffe Borbone as runner-up.
Elsewhere on the race’s final classification, Bahrain Victorious Development Team’s Balint Feldhoffer from Hungary took 15th overall in the race and Kasper Borremans from Finland was 30th. Santiago Basso and Giacomo Rosato, both from Italy, did not finish.
Meanwhile, Borremans shone brightest amongst the Bahrain Victorious Development Team riders yesterday and claimed a top 10 spot in the 87th Giro del Belvedere, also held in Italy.
The race was another one-day, under-23 event, part of this season’s UCI Europe Tour.
Borremans was ninth overall after crossing the finish line a minute and 27 seconds behind Lorenzo Finn of Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe Rookies team, who won in 3:54:04. William Smith of Team Visma-Lease a Bike Development was second and Bambagioni came third for his second podium in as many days.
Jan Michal Jackowiak from Poland, who competed for Rosato in the event, followed for the Bahrain squad in 28th, while de Gendt took 33rd to complete a strong two days’ showing. Feldhoffer was classified 80th, while Basso did not make it to the finish line.
