MPs have unanimously approved an urgent proposal calling for an infrastructure overhaul in Suq Waqif – one of Bahrain’s busiest residential and commercial districts.
The proposal, spearheaded by area MP Dr Abdulhakeem Al Sheno and backed by several colleagues, was endorsed during Parliament’s session yesterday.
MPs claimed that the condition of streets and internal roads in the area had deteriorated, threatening public safety and undermining the quality of life for residents, shop owners and visitors.
“Potholes, cracked and worn asphalt, and ineffective rainwater drainage have become a daily hazard, with water pooling during rainfall, disrupting traffic and increasing the risk of accidents and vehicle damage,” Mr Al Sheno alleged.
Legislators noted that the situation was also affecting commercial activity in the historic market area, which remains a vital social and economic hub. They said residents face difficulty moving around due to the lack of clear traffic signage, insufficient street lighting and the absence of safe pedestrian crossings.
The urgent proposal calls for immediate implementation of a comprehensive rehabilitation and maintenance project covering all streets and roads in Suq Waqif and upgrading the rainwater drainage network to prevent flooding during rains. In addition, the proposal pushes for redesigning internal roads to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
MPs said improving its infrastructure was essential not only for safety, but also for preserving the area’s economic vitality.
The proposal has now been referred to the Cabinet for review.
