CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious superstar Pello Bilbao overcame a late puncture to claim a solid top 20 finish in the 60th Amstel Gold Race yesterday in the Netherlands.
The one-day elite men’s event, part of this year’s Union Cycliste Internationale World Tour, featured a course of 257.2 kilometres, starting from the city of Maastricht and finishing in the town of Valkenburg.
Bilbao put in a valiant effort to get back into contention and was able to salvage 15th place amongst the highly competitive field of 175 riders.
After losing his position amongst the leaders, the Spaniard finished in a trail group nearly three minutes behind winner Remco Evenepoel of Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe, who won in a gruelling total race time of five hours 59 minutes and 40 seconds.
Matej Mohoric of Slovenia was Bahrain Victorious’ second-best finisher in 60th, while Attila Valter of Hungary came 75th and Edoardo Zambanini of Italy was 77th. Pau Miquel from Spain was classified 108th, and Fran Miholjevic from Croatia was 113th.
Their Belgian teammate Vlad van Mechelen did not finish the race.
