Bahrain’s main central market is set to undergo a major facelift this year.
Infrastructure inside and around the Manama Central Market will be enhanced, with plans including upgrades to the surrounding road network, repairs to internal streets and pavements, improvements to the safety of electrical connections, and the implementation of preventive maintenance for air conditioning systems.
Officials say the initiative aims to tackle long-standing infrastructure challenges while ensuring the market is better equipped to meet rising demand and modern standards of safety and comfort.
The Manama Central Market remains a vital commercial artery for residents, restaurants and retailers across Bahrain, making the upgrade an important step in preserving its role as a key supplier of fresh produce, meat and fish while transforming it into a more efficient, shopper-friendly environment.
A high-profile inspection by officials from the Capital Trustees Board and the Capital Trustees Authority was held yesterday ahead of the work.
The field visit, led by Capital Trustees Board chairman Saleh Tarradah and Capital Trustees Authority (Municipality) director-general Alya Yousif, brought together board members and senior municipal officials to assess first-hand what is needed to modernise one of the capital’s busiest commercial hubs.
The inspection forms part of a wider plan to upgrade central markets across the Capital Governorate, with a focus on improving operational efficiency, upgrading infrastructure and enhancing the overall experience for both traders and shoppers.
Mr Tarradah said the market’s overhaul was a priority within the board’s broader vision to modernise public marketplaces.
“We are committed to continuously developing central markets in the Capital Governorate to ensure they provide a modern environment that keeps pace with today’s requirements,” he said. “This is not just about maintenance, but about enriching the experience for consumers and vendors alike.”
He explained that the works at Manama Central Market fall within an integrated plan aimed at updating operational infrastructure, raising service standards and ensuring sustainable efficiency across all facilities.
“The maintenance and development works here are part of a comprehensive roadmap to enhance operational performance and ensure that the market continues to serve the public at the highest standards,” Mr Tarradah added.
Ms Yousif stressed that the municipality was moving ahead with a structured periodic maintenance programme designed to keep the market fully functional while preparing it for long-term upgrades.
“We are keen to continue implementing our periodic maintenance plan for Manama Central Market in a way that raises operational efficiency and ensures the readiness of all facilities,” she said.
“Our approach focuses on improving services while meeting the needs of traders and visitors through close co-ordination with relevant authorities.”
