Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched a project to build a 50-acre "Film City" in Lahore to revive the local movie industry.
Backed by a PKR 2 billion (BD2.7 million) budget, the facility will include world-class studios, advanced special effects labs, a film and music school, and outdoor sets.
The project aims to create thousands of jobs, reduce the reliance on international production services, and turn Pakistan into a global creative hub. The initiative is also designed to empower young artists and help the local film industry compete on an international stage.
The government is currently providing PKR 30 million (BD40,800) each to 32 selected filmmakers to fund their projects, with a second round of applications set to open in June.
In a separate move to lower operational costs for theatre owners, the government is also assisting cinemas in switching to solar energy.
