His Majesty King Hamad has reaffirmed Bahrain’s unwavering commitment to upholding freedom of opinion and expression, alongside responsible Press freedom.
In a message marking World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3, the King expressed his appreciation for the Press and media community, noting that these principles are fundamental to a nation built on the rule of law and constitutional institutions, and reflect the kingdom’s ongoing democratic process since the launch of its reforms.
His Majesty stressed that free and responsible speech reflects the vitality of societies and their public conscience.
He noted that Unesco has designated this year’s theme as ‘Shaping a Future of Peace’, adding that the theme goes beyond media issues to the broader human pursuit of peace, harmony and stability. “Journalism, when grounded in accuracy, responsibility and professionalism, becomes an effective force in building peace,” he noted.
“Bahrain continues to enjoy strong national cohesion that embraces different religions and beliefs, and maintains the unity of its people in both prosperity and times of difficulty.
“Bahrain remains committed to good neighbourly relations, has never sought confrontation, and continues to pursue co-operation based on established principles and values, maintaining a balanced and responsible approach in its regional and international relations,” he affirmed.
In reference to the unprecedented and unjustified Iranian aggression against Bahrain and other Gulf and Arab countries, the King commended the readiness and vigilance of the Bahrain Defence Force and security bodies, and the national responsibility they demonstrated in protecting the kingdom.
He also expressed appreciation to the Bahraini people for their loyalty and unity, describing them as the nation’s formidable line of defence.
His Majesty expressed appreciation to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for supporting the Press and media sector, and for his efforts to recognise journalists and media professionals on Bahraini Press Day, observed annually on May 7.
The King also commended the pivotal role of Bahraini media across Press, radio and television during recent critical times, noting its professional performance in conveying accurate information to local, regional and international audiences. He said the national media serves as an important line of defence during times of crisis.
He highlighted the development of Bahraini journalism since the launch of the first newspaper in 1939, noting its continued advancement in professionalism, integrity and responsibility, and its role in supporting national development, reflecting society and promoting knowledge and awareness.
His Majesty stressed the importance of journalists and media professionals using their platforms to promote peace, dialogue and understanding, and to uphold the responsibility of the word with honesty and professionalism.
