GCC GAMES – BAHRAIN’S delegation at the fourth GCC Games features a total of 219 participants, the Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) announced yesterday.
The kingdom’s representatives are headlined by 146 athletes – 100 men and 49 women – who will be going for gold in 16 sports in Doha, Qatar.
As previously reported in the GDN, the Bahrainis were originally set to compete in 15 sports, namely archery, athletics, 3x3 basketball, billiards, boxing, handball, fencing, karate, padel, shooting, snooker, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, and volleyball. The nationals have now added equestrian to their programme, the BOC has confirmed.
A number of members of Bahrain’s administrative team have already arrived in the Qatari capital. Led by chef de mission and BOC Arab and international relations head Maryam Mardana, they began the final preparations for tonight’s official start to the GCC Games.
Several national squads have also already reached Doha and they immediately began gearing up for their respective events.
Competition starts tomorrow in five sports for Bahrain, including 3x3 basketball, billiards, swimming, table tennis, and taekwondo.
The Bahrainis will be looking to add to their rich medal haul from the previous editions of the GCC Games – held in Kuwait City, Kuwait in 2022; in Dammam, Saudi Arabia in 2015; and in Bahrain in 2011.
The nationals bagged a sensational 64 medals from the 2022 meeting, including 20 gold medals, 23 silver, and 21 bronze. In 2015, they came away with 43 medals, including six gold, 21 silver, and 16 bronze; while in 2011, Bahrain came away with 19 medals, including eight gold, six silver, and five bronze.
