The UAE is set to implement a new Civil Transactions Law, which will lower the age of legal adulthood in the country from 21 to 18.
From June 1, individuals will be considered to have full legal capacity upon reaching the age of 18.
Article 84 of the law states:
* Every person who has reached the age of majority, enjoying full mental capacity, and has not been interdicted shall have full legal capacity to exercise their civil rights.
* A person reaches the age of majority upon completing eighteen (18) Gregorian years.
The amendment aligns with recent global trends and legal developments within the UAE. Currently, the minimum driving age is 17, while banking practices generally permit individuals aged 18 to open accounts independently. A recent amendment to the Commercial Transactions Law also lowered the age threshold for engaging in trade from 21 to 18.
