Prominent artist Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa inaugurated his participation in Italy’s renowned 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia with the unveiling of his monumental installation, Guarding the Passage, to an audience of leading art critics, cultural figures and international media representatives.
Through the work, he presents a compelling visual and philosophical exploration of the balance between protection and openness. Positioned at the intersection of architecture and memory, the installation reimagines the concept of the ‘cage’ as a space for human connection and interaction rather than isolation or confinement.

Made from layered red metal grids, the work balances solidity and transparency. It conceals and reveals, highlighting privacy and global connection. Visitors can walk through overlapping corridors where light, shadow and movement create an immersive artistic experience.
Young mind enjoying the structure
The installation’s vivid red hue symbolises sovereignty, resilience and Bahrain’s national identity, while its open-mesh structure evokes values of freedom, openness and cross-cultural dialogue.
On this occasion, Shaikh Rashid dedicated his participation to His Majesty King Hamad and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minster, praising their cultural vision and leadership in strengthening Bahrain’s position as a global centre for creativity and a beacon of civilisational dialogue.

Shaikh Rashid said: “Our participation in the Venice Biennale reflects the power of art to serve as a cultural bridge between East and West. Through Guarding the Passage, we aim to present the reality of Bahrain today – a nation that proudly preserves its identity and achievements while embracing the world with a message of peace and tolerance.”
Structure takes shape
“The work reflects the contemporary Bahraini experience, where security and stability provide the foundation for broader global engagement. Art remains one of the most powerful means of communicating our civilisational message and human values to the international community.”
