CYCLING – TEAM Bahrain Victorious rider Afonso Eulalio defended the Maglia Bianca, or white jersey, for best young rider yesterday after the 16th stage of this year’s Giro d’Italia – the first of three grand tours this international cycling season.
Eulalio fought hard on the final climb to finish the 113-kilometre leg in 11th overall. That helped him extend his advantage in the youth ranking to two minutes and 17 seconds from Davide Piganzoli of Team Visma-Lease a Bike.
Eulalio crossed the finish line yesterday a little more than three minutes behind stage winner Jonas Vingegaard of Team Visma-Lease a Bike, retaining the Maglia Rosa – once held by Eulalio – as the overall leader.
Bahrain Victorious teammate Damiano Caruso followed in 17th place, while Mathijs Paasschens and Edoardo Zambanini were 52nd and 53rd, respectively. Alec Segaert came 64th yesterday and Fran Miholjevic was 66th, while Robert Stannard completed the squad’s competitors in 96th place.
With yesterday’s results, Eulalio dropped three spots further back on the general classification to fifth while Caruso improved one place to 13th. Segaert remained sixth on the points ranking while Bahrain Victorious rose one position to seventh on the teams’ standings.
This year’s Giro d’Italia is its 109th edition and it is part of the Union Cycliste Internationale World Tour 2026. As the first grand tour of the year, it will be followed by the Tour de France in July and the Vuelta a Espana in August and September.
This year’s Giro d’Italia will be covering a total of 3,470 kilometres and 47,539 metres of elevation. It will continue until Sunday. Today will see the 17th stage, covering 202km.
