A Bahraini engineer with decades of experience has created a ‘roadmap’ for the kingdom’s next generation of innovators, aiming to help them transform ambitious ideas into practical projects.
In an initiative reflecting a spirit of support for youth, Dr Yousef Al Ameen is launching his new guide, Learning the Smart Idea++ Methodology for Projects and Innovation Competitions, which he will offer as a free gift to young innovators in Bahrain.
Dr Al Ameen is the author of a series of educational books for children, including The Smartphone Workbook and The Solar Energy Workbook, and has previously organised colouring contests to underline the value of hands-on learning.
He told the GDN that the guide is designed to empower young people to turn their ideas into viable projects through a simplified methodology that bridges the gap between theory and practice.
“How many times have you had a brilliant idea, whether it be for research, an assignment at school or work, artistic project, or a new product, but had no idea where to begin?” said Dr Al Ameen.
“The idea suddenly sparks in your mind like a flash, but the spark and excitement soon fade away. Questions begin to arise: Is it simple to implement? How will I carry it out?
“This is where many young people stop – not because their idea is weak, but because they do not know the right steps and methods to achieve it.
“They may feel their ideas are unclear, costly or unrealistic, and struggle to explain or present them convincingly.
“This simplified guide aims to provide a clear, practical approach to help them move forward and realise their ideas.”
Dr Al Ameen is considered one of Bahrain’s leading experts in the fields of engineering and training, with more than three decades of experience in both the public and private sectors. He has delivered training programmes in the fields of project management and innovation, in co-operation with the Bahrain Society of Engineers and several local universities and hundreds of engineers have benefited from them.
His latest guide is a clear roadmap, based on internationally recognised methodologies that have evolved over the years.
Based on a study done by Dr Al Ameen himself, the guide has been specially designed to transform ideas into strategic goals so that they become successful and sustainable projects.
It presents the SMART++ methodology, a widely-used framework for setting clear, actionable, and trackable goals that ensures objectives are well-defined by forcing you to evaluate five criteria: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.
The guide also provides a set of essential skills required by an innovator such as problem analysis, identifying needs, pitching and professional presentation and basics of project management.
Additionally, it includes motivational exercises in the form of a ‘Brain Workout’ aimed at developing observation and analytical skills.
In a motivational gesture, Dr Al Ameen clarified that the guide is not for sale, and will be instead provided for free as a gift to ambitious young people across the country.
He has already delivered multiple copies of the guides to universities including Bahrain Polytechnic, where he handed the copies to chief executive officer Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin.
He hopes that it will help youngsters transform their ideas into successful projects.
“Journey begins with an idea and ends with a goal and a project to achieve it,” said Dr Al Ameen.
“Continue your development so that your project remains sustainable, leaving behind a meaningful impact.
“Your country needs your ideas, and every great project started with someone like you.
“Do not wait for someone else to solve a problem that you are capable of solving; be that person.”
