British newspaper The Guardian has warned in its editorial about the danger of the exacerbating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stressing that as US President Donald Trump looks for peace with Iran, the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu escalates elsewhere – and Europe stands by.
The newspaper affirmed that the US, being Israel’s chief ally, funder and arms supplier, can rein in its Prime Minister.
But, with President Trump’s hands tied on Iran, the Israeli Prime Minister seems bent on rekindling war elsewhere.
As President Trump talks up a new peace deal in the Middle East, Israeli forces have expanded far beyond the territory they agreed to hold, attacking Palestinians in an undefined zone around their positions and carrying out air strikes deeper into Gaza.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has reaffirmed Israel’s intent to expel Palestinians from Gaza.
He terms it “voluntary migration”.
But, if people leave because their homes and essential infrastructure are in ruins, food and medicine are desperately short, and they remain under military assault, that’s not voluntary: it’s ethnic cleansing, the newspaper wrote.
