MOTORSPORT – BAHRAINI-British motor racing team 2 Seas Motorsport had a forgettable third round of the 2026 GT World Challenge (GTWC) Europe yesterday, held at Autodromo Nazionale Monza in Italy.
Competing amongst a huge 57-car field, both of 2 Seas’ contenders did not make it to the chequered flag in an eventful, three-hour endurance event.
2 Seas’ #3 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo – running in the Pro class and operated by 2 Seas in cooperation with Team Verstappen Racing, owned by four-time Formula One drivers’ world champion Max Verstappen – was caught in a massive incident seconds after the rolling start as the field headed into the first corner.
Multiple cars crashed into each other and were taken out, and although the #3 was able to continue the race, it sustained enough damage to later force Chris Lulham to park the car track side and retire while running in 44th place overall, and with around an hour and 40 minutes still to go.
Meanwhile, 2 Seas’ #222 Mercedes-AMG avoided the early carnage and were battling for a podium in the Bronze category. But after dropping behind following a late pit stop, Kiern Jewiss also had to retire with a little over 20 minutes remaining after the car caught fire underneath, creating a trail of smoke down the front straight and a smoke screen after coming to a stop at turn one.
At the end of the race, 20 cars had DNFs on the final classification, including both of 2 Seas’ challengers.
Taking a stunning overall victory were Silver class competitors Tresor Attempto Racing, featuring Rocco Mazzola, Sebastian Ogaard, and Ariel Levi in their #66 Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo II.
Following yesterday’s event, 2 Seas, co-owned by Bahrain’s Shaikh Isa bin Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, will be back in action in the GTWC Europe’s fourth round, the 24 Hours of Spa, scheduled for June 24 to 28 in Belgium. It will be the third of five endurance meetings this season.
