Visitors to the Karbabad coastline may soon enjoy shaded seating, landscaped areas and softly lit walkways under a new proposal approved by the Capital Trustees Board, aimed at enhancing the Bahrain Fort waterfront without compromising its historic character.
The initiative, submitted by Capital Trustees Board member Dr Abdulhassan Al Dairy, focuses on developing the stretch of coast adjacent to the Bahrain Fort Museum through a series of environmentally friendly improvements designed to complement its historic surroundings.
The project includes planting trees, installing solar-powered lighting, adding cement and wooden seating, and creating comfortable spaces for visitors to enjoy one of the kingdom’s most iconic waterfront locations.
“The objective is to transform this beautiful coastal area into a welcoming destination for families, tourists and residents while respecting its exceptional historical value,” said Dr Al Dairy.
“Bahrain Fort is one of our most important cultural landmarks and the surrounding coastline deserves attention that reflects its significance. We want visitors to enjoy the area in a way that highlights both its natural beauty and its heritage.”
The recommendation was reviewed by the board’s services and public utilities committee, which examined ownership details, tourism considerations and heritage protection requirements before endorsing the proposal.
Committee chairman Mohammed Tawfeeq Al Abbas said during yesterday’s meeting at the board’s headquarters in Tubli that the development represented a balanced approach between tourism enhancement and cultural preservation.
“This project supports national efforts to expand quality public spaces and improve access to coastal destinations,” he said.
“The committee was keen to ensure that all development works remain fully aligned with the requirements of the relevant authorities, particularly those responsible for protecting Bahrain’s archaeological and historical sites.”
According to committee findings, the Tourism Ministry strongly supported the initiative, describing it as consistent with the kingdom’s efforts to increase family-friendly marine destinations and enrich tourism experiences through recreational and leisure facilities.
The ministry also highlighted the project’s potential to showcase Bahrain’s maritime heritage and strengthen the appeal of the Capital Governorate as a tourism destination.
Meanwhile, the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (Baca) stipulated a number of conditions to safeguard the integrity of the Unesco-listed Bahrain Fort site and its surrounding landscape.
The authority stressed that no visual alterations should undermine the historic relationship between Bahrain Fort, the ancient Dilmun Harbour and the surrounding coastline. It also called for strict adherence to site management regulations and restrictions on introducing landscaping elements that could affect the area’s historical authenticity.
Board members welcomed the proposal, describing it as a practical step towards improving public amenities while preserving one of Bahrain’s most treasured heritage locations.
The approved recommendation covers government-owned Property No 04026047 and calls for the partial development of the Karbabad coast in accordance with the observations and requirements of both the ministry and the Baca.
“If implemented, the project is expected to create a more attractive waterfront environment,” said board chairman Saleh Tarradah.
“It will also encourage outdoor activities and provide visitors with a unique opportunity to experience Bahrain’s history against the backdrop of a revitalised coastal setting,” he added.
