The General Directorate of Jaafari Affairs at the Islamic Endowments Council has stressed the importance of keeping ma’atams free from any form of partisan competition, warning that such practices undermine the social harmony associated with these religious institutions.
The statement follows the publication of a social media announcement by one ma’atam promoting a debate between candidates contesting the ma’atam’s board of directors.
The directorate emphasised that ma’atams should remain focused on their religious mission and the Hussaini rituals they are established to serve.
It said such activities could create divisions and alignments that are inconsistent with the status and message of the ma’atams.
