BASKETBALL – OLYMPIC medal-winning head coach and former NBA champion assistant coach Sergio Scariolo will be conducting an international course for coaches in the kingdom, the Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA) announced yesterday.
The EuroLeague Head Coaches Board Clinic 2026 will be taking place in August.
Scariolo will be heading the programme, which is open to coaches both inside and outside of Bahrain.
Scariolo is one of the world’s most-renowned basketball coaches. He helmed Spain’s senior men’s basketball national team for over a decade, guiding them to the silver medals at the London Olympics in 2012, the bronze medals at the Rio Olympics in 2016, the gold medals at the Fiba Basketball World Cup in 2019, and to multiple podium finishes in EuroBasket.
During those successes, he had coached Spanish basketball superstars such as Pau Gasol, Rudy Fernandez, Juan Carlos Navarro, Jose Calderon, Marc Gasol, Serge Ibaka, Ricky Rubio, and Willy Hernangomez, to name a few.
The 65-year-old Italian was also an assistant coach to Nick Nurse in the NBA, helping guide the Toronto Raptors to the NBA title in 2019, with a team that included Kawhi Leonard, Kyle Lowry, Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, Danny Green, Fred Van Vleet, Norman Powell, Marc Gasol, and Ibaka, among others.
Scariolo has also headed a number of clubs in Europe, including Spanish giants Real Madrid, which was his most recent post.
The upcoming course is part of the BBA’s aim of hosting international training programmes for coaches on a yearly basis featuring prominent names in the game. This will contribute to the development of Bahraini coaches and equip them with the latest methods and concepts in coaching.
