The Singapore Prison Service (SPS) and the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX) will launch a three-month trial this October, deploying autonomous security robots to curb inmate violence.
Standing 157cm tall and weighing 510kg, the robot, named PROTECT (Prisons Robot To Eradicate Conflicts and Threats), will patrol three prison institutions. It utilises AI-driven human recognition to livestream real-time video and audio back to a central command centre.
If a fight breaks out, officers can remotely trigger the machine's onboard tactical tools-including pepper spray, a long-range acoustic device, and distraction lights-to contain the conflict safely.
The initiative aims to protect prison staff during violent incidents amid a sharp rise in inmate aggression.
