The Kuwait Embassy in Lisbon said on Saturday that Portugal’s new law banning clothing or accessories that conceal the face in public places will take effect on September 23.
Violating the prohibition against concealing one's face is punishable by a fine of €150 to €750 (approx. BD65 to BD325) in cases of negligence, and €400 to €3,000 (approx. BD173 to BD1,300) in cases of intent.
The law bans face coverings on roads, in public places, at facilities providing public services, and during sporting events, activities and demonstrations. It also criminalises forcing any person to conceal their face through threats, violence, coercion or abuse of authority, with penalties of up to two years in prison or a fine.
The legislation provides exceptions for health, professional, artistic or advertising reasons. These exceptions also apply to aircraft, diplomatic and consular facilities, or places of worship and other sacred sites.
The embassy urged Kuwaiti citizens visiting Portugal to observe local laws and regulations to avoid penalties or legal action.
