TABLE TENNIS – BAHRAIN bowed out of further medal contention yesterday from the men’s teams’ table tennis tournament at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The kingdom’s senior men’s paddlers bowed 0-3 to their counterparts from Kazakhstan in their round-of-16 clash at Sky Hall Toyota.
Rashed Sanad lost to Alan Kurmangaliyev 0-3 (3-11, 3-11, 6-11) in the opening match, and then Mohammed Alaali fell to Kirill Gerassimenko 0-3 (4-11, 9-11, 9-11).
Mohamed Saleh then came close to securing a victory for the nationals against Sanzhar Zhubanov, but narrowly lost 2-3 (2-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-4, 16-18) after extending to a fifth game in their marathon contest.
With their men’s teams’ medal bid cut short, the Bahrainis next shift their focus to the men’s doubles.
Sanad and Saleh will be pairing up in the competition and will take on Abai Kasymov and Atai Kasymov in the first round.
Alaali, on the other hand, will be playing alongside Sayed Mahfoodh and they face Pakistan’s Taha Bilal and Abdal Khan in their opening fixture.
