A middle-aged woman has been accused of attacking policemen with a broken glass after they came to her house to arrest her for a suspected cybercrime.
The 55-year-old Bahraini is on trial at the High Criminal Court for assaulting members of the public security force, resorting to violence, interfering with officers’ duties as well as insulting and disrespecting them.
“I received instructions to go to the defendant’s residence as reinforcement, and when I entered the house, I saw her holding a broken glass,” a 35-year-old policeman testified.
“And she said: ‘I will kill anyone who comes near me’. I tried to take the glass from her, but she assaulted me, and injured my thumb, forcing me to withdraw from the scene.”
Another senior officer at the scene also gave his account of the incident.
“We came to arrest the defendant based on a warrant issued by the Anti-Cybercrime Directorate,” the 32-year-old said.
“She refused to open the door and hurled insults at us, and so we broke it down on orders.
“When my colleague withdrew, I attempted to pull the glass from her hand and suffered a cut, but I managed to remove it.
“I tried to arrest her, but she resisted and attempted to get on top of me, injuring my back. However, a policewoman was eventually able to apprehend her.”
In the police station, the defendant allegedly assaulted the policewoman.
“She unlocked her own handcuffs and tried to attack me,” the female officer said.
“I tried to restrain her and, in the process, injured my hand, suffering torn ligaments in my right hand.”
According to court documents, the injury will take more than three weeks to heal, but the alleged victim is expected to make a full recovery. Hence, the ligament tear was not classified as a long-term injury.
The suspect was charged with assaulting the two on-duty policemen with a sharp object, allegedly slashing their hands while they were executing an order to arrest her.
She was also charged with using force against the policewoman with the intent of unlawfully preventing her from carrying out her duties and causing her injury.
Prosecutors further accused her of insulting the three officers, harming their reputations and honour through claims that had ‘no basis in reality’.
It remains unclear what the original allegations against the defendant were that led to the arrest warrant being issued.
The middle-aged Bahraini admitted to the charges.
Judges have set October 13 as the date to issue a verdict in the case as she continues to be remanded in custody.
