The latest official statistics from the Higher Education Council show that the total number of students enrolled in public and private higher education institutions rose to 60,723 during the 2025-2026 academic year, an increase of 8,049 students in one year, representing a 15.3 per cent growth compared with 52,674 students in the 2024-2025 academic year.
Statistics published through Bahrain’s Open Data Portal showed that 41,824 students were enrolled in public higher education institutions, an increase of 5,433, while private institutions had 18,899 students, up by 2,616 from the previous academic year.
Bahraini students accounted for 82.5pc of the total, numbering 50,097, followed by Saudi students at 8.99pc, or 5,461 students, and non-GCC students at 6.16pc, or 3,739 students. The data showed that 76.3pc of Bahraini students were enrolled in public higher education institutions, compared with 23.7pc in private institutions.
Female students accounted for 53.9pc of the total.
