SWIMMING: Robert Bonsall set a new national record in the men’s 400 metres freestyle heats yesterday on the last day of swimming events at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Bonsall completed the third of three preliminary round heats in a time of three minutes 57.73 seconds for the kingdom’s all-time best in the event. He finished his race seventh while his mark was 14th-quickest overall – missing out on the final – amongst the 28 competitors who took to the pool at Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
Also yesterday, Bahrain’s Sana Le Falher placed 10th from 12 swimmers in the women’s 800m freestyle final with a time of 9:27.33, Asma Le Falher ranked 18th from 27 in the women’s 50m freestyle heats with a mark of 29.33 seconds, and Abdulla Jamal was 30th from 40 hopefuls in the men’s 50m breaststroke heats in 29.71s.
TABLE TENNIS: Mohamed Saleh and Rashed Sanad bowed out of the men’s singles tournament. Saleh lost to Woojin Jang from South Korea 0-4 (4-11, 9-11, 4-11, 8-11) in the round of 32, while Sanad fell to Yun-ju Lin of Chinese Taipei 0-4 (4-11, 7-11, 8-11, 4-11) in the same stage.
They also lost in the men’s doubles round of 32 to Chinese Taipei’s Hsien-chia Hsu and Jing-kai Hung 0-3 (12-14, 4-11, 11-13), while Mohammed Alaali and Sayed Mahfoodh bowed to Singapore’s Zhe Yu Chew and Josh Chua 0-3 (13-15, 3-11, 3-11).
DRESSAGE: Megan Black ranked 27th riding Deinrich in the first individual qualifier of the dressage individual competition, while Aneesa Mahmood on Samira O placed 40th.
BADMINTON: Sayed Adnan Jaafar lost in the men’s singles first round against Hai Dang Nguyen from Vietnam 0-2 (8-21, 8-21).
BOXING: Maryam Khamis lost by unanimous decision to Kinga Wangmo from Bhutan in the women’s 54kg category. Four of the five judges scored the bout 30-27 for Wangmo, while the other had it at 29-28.
ESPORTS: Bahrain’s Yusuf Bahram, Mohamed Debras, and Husam Alansari lost to Japan 1-3 in the fighting games quarter-finals, featuring Street Fighter Six, Tekken Eight, and The King of Fighters XV.
