Gernot Rohr, the head coach of the Benin national football team, has expressed strong discontent with Argentina regarding the treatment his team received during a friendly match, according to goal.com.
The match, which ended with a 3-0 victory for Argentina in front of an enthusiastic crowd, also marked Lionel Messi's final game.
While the Argentine squad celebrated Messi's farewell, Rohr's players attempted to engage in a friendly gesture by seeking to swap shirts and take photos with the legendary player, but their efforts were met with disappointment.
Rohr shared his frustrations during an interview on the RMC radio show "Rothen s'enflamme," stating, "Yes, it was extremely difficult. We tried."
He articulated that the lack of hospitality was particularly disheartening, as the Benin players were denied even a simple opportunity for remembrance, saying, "The only shame is that the Argentines gave us nothing. No photo with Messi, no shirt.
They didn't even let us into the tunnel or the dressing room." Despite attempts to connect, Benin's players were blocked by security, who did not allow them any access.
In a minor gesture of goodwill, the Benin team presented a bouquet of flowers in their national colours-yellow, red, and green-but this effort yielded no positive reciprocation.
Rohr did, however, manage to give Messi's 2018 shirt to Argentina's coach Lionel Scaloni, who had Messi sign it before returning it to him. Ultimately, that signed shirt was the only tangible outcome of their visit.
