NEW details have emerged about the alleged assault of a schoolgirl as she walked to a bus stop, a day after a suspect was arrested in connection with the incident.
The 24-year-old man allegedly approached the 16-year-old student from behind in the early morning, covered her mouth with his hand and sexually assaulted her, the Public Prosecution said yesterday.
He fled the scene when a car passed by, the statement added.
The suspect was identified and arrested within eight hours of the girl’s guardian filing a report, the GDN reported yesterday.
The Public Prosecution heard testimony from the girl and her parent, questioned the suspect and confronted him with a recording of the incident.
It also ordered samples collected from the scene to be examined.
He was remanded in custody for seven days as investigations continue ahead of an expedited criminal trial.
The Family and Child Prosecution warned that anyone who harms passers-by, threatens their safety in public places or streets, or subjects them to ‘any type of assault or harassment’ will face serious legal consequences.
Earlier, the Interior Ministry urged members of the public to report suspicious or criminal behaviour without delay, stressing that prompt reporting helps police respond swiftly and apprehend those who pose a threat to public safety.
