Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) Governor Khalid Humaidan highlighted the growing impact of climate change on financial stability during the opening of the second Climate Forum in Abu Dhabi.
Organised by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE), the forum was held under the patronage of Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President of the UAE, Deputy Prime Minister, chairman of the Presidential Court, and chairman of the CBUAE board of directors.
Delivering a keynote speech, Mr Humaidan underscored the vital role central banks and regulators play in strengthening financial sector preparedness against climate risks while expanding sustainable finance practices.
He outlined Bahrain’s climate action strategy, emphasising the kingdom’s target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2060 alongside broader environmental and economic goals.
Mr Humaidan stressed that regional co-operation and knowledge-sharing remain crucial for building resilient financial systems and embedding climate considerations into monetary policy frameworks.
The two-day forum convened central bank governors, financial leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss climate-related financial risks and sustainable growth strategies.
The CBUAE initiative serves as a regional platform to harmonise sustainable finance standards and regulatory frameworks.
The forum brings together leading policymakers, central bank officials and financial sector leaders, alongside international experts in climate, finance and financial stability, to discuss the implications of climate change for financial stability and monetary policy, and the role of sustainable finance in the transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy.
In his address, Governor of the CBUAE Khaled Mohamed Balama highlighted the CBUAE’s participation in the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS), which comprises more than 140 central banks and financial supervisors, and its co-chairmanship of the NGFS Workstream on Central Bank Operations, making it the first central bank in the Mena region to hold this role.
