PARA TAEKWONDO – BAHRAIN’S national Para taekwondo athlete Ebrahim Redhwan made history in the kingdom’s first-ever participation in the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Series, capturing the bronze medal in the K44 men’s under-63kg category at the competition held in Paris, France.
Redhwan’s achievement not only marked Bahrain’s first-ever medal in the series, but it also earned him the distinction of being the only Arab athlete to win a medal at the event.
Redhwan began his campaign with a deserved victory over Morocco’s Ayoub Adouich, taking two consecutive rounds to advance to the quarter-finals.
There, the Bahraini athlete continued his impressive performance, defeating Saudi Arabia’s Eyad Abdullah Al Turayk, who is currently ranked ninth in the world in his weight category. The win secured Redhwan’s place in the last four and guaranteed him at least a bronze medal.
In the semis, the Bahraini champion faced a formidable challenge against Türkiye’s Mahmut Bozteke, the world number one in the weight category and gold-medallist at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Despite delivering a strong performance, Redhwan was unable to overcome his opponent, concluding his campaign in third place and taking home the bronze medal.
Redhwan’s participation in the tournament followed his selection among the world’s top 11 athletes in his weight category.
This selection reflects the technical progress achieved by Bahrain’s national Para taekwondo team and the ongoing efforts to develop the team’s performance and strengthen its presence at international competitions.
The team is led by national taekwondo coach Tawfiq Nwaisr and national Para taekwondo coach Fajar Albinali.
This historic achievement represents a significant milestone for Bahraini Para taekwondo in particular and for disability sports in general.
It comes amid the continued support provided by the Bahrain Paralympic Committee, under the presidency of Shaikh Mohammed bin Duaij Al Khalifa, for Paralympic sports and Bahraini athletes.
This support contributes to developing athletes’ technical capabilities, empowering them to represent the kingdom on the international sporting stage and achieving further success.
