Larry the Cat, ‘chief mouser’ to the British cabinet office, has returned to 10 Downing Street after undergoing a minor operation.
The cat, who has seen numerous prime ministers come and go, has become something of a celebrity in Britain. He also has his own profile section on the British government’s official website.
“Our Chief Mouser Larry is back at Downing Street following a minor operation, and is recovering well,” the British prime minister’s office posted on X.
“He is feline much better but taking things one paw at a time,” the statement added. “We are grateful to the vets for their outstanding care.”
An unofficial profile of Larry the Cat responded to the statement saying ‘still got at least six lives left’.
Larry has outlasted six British prime ministers since he moved in in 2011. David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer have all come and gone, and he now serves under Andy Burnham. As the unofficial profile of Larry states on X, the cat is ‘living with his seventh Prime Minister’.
A dog owner, Burnham decided against bringing his pet, Axel, to Downing Street when he moved in owing to fears he might get into a fight with Larry.
“I don’t think the nation would thank me, would they, if I brought Axel down to disturb Larry’s world,” he said at the time.
