Bahrain has marked a medical milestone with the successful completion of its first operation to reconstruct the aortic arch and repair the descending aorta using an advanced hybrid surgical technique.
The landmark procedure, performed at the Mohammed Bin Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa Specialist Cardiac Centre (MKCC), highlights the kingdom’s growing capabilities in specialised cardiac care.
Royal Medical Services commander and Supreme Committee for Treatment Abroad chairman Major General Dr Shaikh Fahad bin Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa affirmed that expanding specialised medical services and adopting modern technologies remain an ongoing priority for RMS.
“This achievement reflects the expertise, national competencies and advanced capabilities the RMS possesses in managing complex medical cases,” he said.
“It demonstrates the capabilities of the RMS workforce and its essential role in advancing specialised medical care through collaboration between the national medical team and international experts.
“This co-operation contributes to strengthening local expertise, establishing advanced surgical techniques within the kingdom and providing patients in Bahrain with access to advanced treatment options.”
The procedure was performed through a collaboration between the National Aortic Disease Treatment Programme (NARP) team and the University Heart Centre Freiburg in Germany.
It was led by MKCC chief of medical staff and interventional cardiology consultant Dr Hossam Noor and university centre’s Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Medicine head Professor Martin Czerny.
The advanced surgical approach is used to treat complex conditions affecting the aorta and involved a multidisciplinary team of consultants and specialists in cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, interventional cardiology and advanced medical imaging.
The procedure took place as part of the Visiting Consultant Programme, implemented by the RMS in collaboration with the Supreme Committee for Treatment Abroad.
Following the milestone, Maj Gen Dr Shaikh Fahad received Dr Noor, Prof Czerny, as well as the team involved in the procedure.
Prof Czerny also participated in the weekly scientific meeting at MKCC, where he delivered a lecture titled ‘The Aorta as an Integrated Organ and Its Implications for Healthcare’.
