Infrastructure works for the new Buri agricultural project have reached 87 per cent completion, with the project expected to be completed before the end of 2026, Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak announced yesterday.
The minister made the statement as he inspected the project with National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD) secretary-general Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, and Agriculture and Animal Wealth Affairs Under-Secretary Asim Abdulla.
He said irrigation networks, water wells and two main electricity substations had been completed, while construction was progressing on a desalination plant with a daily capacity of 567 cubic metres to meet the project’s water requirements.
The minister noted that 12 Bahraini farmers had received their allocated plots and begun constructing agricultural facilities and greenhouses, with work on these facilities reaching 75pc completion.
The minister explained that the project is among the initiatives supporting national efforts to strengthen the agricultural sector and food security while increasing local production.
He noted that implementation had reached an advanced stage, with the ministry continuing to complete the infrastructure and services required to enable Bahraini farmers to develop their agricultural projects and improve their efficiency.
The ministry continues to provide technical support and agricultural guidance through specialists and agricultural supervision teams to ensure that projects meet approved technical requirements and make the best use of the allocated land.
Shaikha Maram highlighted co-operation between NIAD and the ministry in supporting Bahraini farmers, increasing local agricultural production, and strengthening food security.
The project covers approximately 82,000 square metres and comprises 12 plots ranging from 6,000 to 8,000 square metres. The land was allocated exclusively to Bahraini farmers through a public tender under 10-year contracts, including a one-year grace period.
