Manama: Shura Council member Sawsan Taqawi lost her seat as the chairwoman of the foreign affairs, defence and national security committee yesterday.
She was voted out of the post following a campaign by Dr Abdulaziz Al Ajman, who served as vice-chairman during the last legislative term.
The seven-member committee elected him chairman and Dr Mohammed Al Khozaie vice-chairman.
Elections were conducted in other committees as well with Dalal Al Zayed elected unopposed as chairwoman of the legislative and legal affairs committee for the fifth consecutive time and Khamis Al Rumaihi as her vice-chairman.
Khalid Al Maskati remained in his post as the chairman of the financial and economic affairs committee for the 10th consecutive time – a joint record with Shura Council first vice-chairman Jamal Fakhro.
Dr Abdulaziz Abul, meanwhile, was elected unopposed for the second year as the committee’s vice-chairman.
Jehad Al Fadhel was elected unopposed as services committee chairwoman, while Nawar Al Mahmood kept his post as vice-chairman.
Faoud Al Haji was elected for the sixth time as the public utilities and environment affairs committee chairman and Juma Al Ka’abi retained his post as vice-chairman.
Elections for the council’s three specific committees were also held.
Ahmed Al Haddad was elected human rights committee chairman for the second year in a row, while Shaikh Jawad Buhussain was elected vice-chairman.
The youth and sports committee named Sameer Al Baharna as its chairman and Bassam Albinmohammed as vice-chairman.
Hala Fayez was elected chairwoman of the woman and child committee along with Fatema Al Kooheji as vice-chairwoman.
The Shura Council also selected Mr Fakhro, Mr Al Haddad, Ms Al Kooheji and Dr Al Khozaie for the parliamentary executive committee, which is headed by parliament chairman Ahmed Al Mulla and also includes four MPs who were already selected by parliament last week.
The executive committee is responsible for selections to take part in conferences abroad.
