Manama: A new initiative to prevent massive food waste in Bahrain and ensure better management has been launched.
The move was unveiled by the Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE) and the Hifzalnema Society during a forum at the Rotana Downtown Hotel, Manama.
SCE chief executive Dr Mohammed Mubarak bin Daina stressed the need to reduce food waste and optimising resources.
“Households dispose of 5,500 tonnes of waste on an average every day – of which 65 per cent are organic objects, mainly food,” he said.
He urged efficient solutions to deal with this challenge and reduce waste instead of dumping food which may be detrimental to public health and the environment.
Hifzalnema Society chairman Abdullatif Al-Rajehi said that programmes would be launched to enhance awareness and improve waste management.
“Dozens of restaurants and hotels operating in Bahrain have already backed the initiative”, he said, stressing efforts to engage more parties to contribute to the collective action.
