THOUSANDS of expatriate workers have received food rations as part of the Migrant Workers Protection Society (MWPS) Covid-19 Relief Fund.
The fund, which was launched in late March, aimed to help daily wage workers who were among the first to lose their daily income as a result of the pandemic, and provide them with a month’s worth of food items.
However, as the pandemic grew, there was a significant increase in the number of expatriate low-income workers requesting support including domestic workers, employees of restaurants, salons and cleaning companies as well as owners of small businesses.
“This is a time for the whole community to come together and stand by those who have been hit hard by the financial and emotional stresses of this period,” said MWPS chairwoman Noora Feleyfel.
MWPS members and volunteers began by distributing food rations to 60 people a day, extending to 180 people daily now.
Within eight weeks the society has helped 7,000 workers of various nationalities.
Those wishing to donate to the fund can transfer the money to the MWPS account (IBAN BH21 NBOB 0000 0099 6077 19).
