MORE than BD128 million is still owed to the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) in unpaid bills.
Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Wael Al Mubarak revealed this in response to a question by MP Isa Al Qadi.
The minister said that subsidised Bahraini household accounts owed BD45.1m while unsubsidised Bahraini accounts owed BD38.4m.
“The amount due from expatriate households has reached BD5.6m,” he said, adding that action would be taken to recover the dues.
Businesses owed BD38.9m that needed to be paid within a maximum of six months.
“We are closely following payments to the EWA and should there be a failure, the account will be closed and money collected through a court order,” said Mr Mubarak.
“A total of 733 accounts have been closed despite repeated requests for payment. However, most people are keen to settle their dues.”
Mr Al Mubarak also said that subsidies for Bahraini households would continue.
