IT never ceases to amaze me how greedy, stingy and lazy some apparently well-off people can be and how wrong their priorities in life are.
Take the example of the brand spanking new, state-of-the-art terminal building which the government has had constructed.
In effect this is a gift to the people of Bahrain – local and expatriates alike. It shows Bahrain at its best to every newcomer to the island.
The new building includes a multi-storey car park where parking is quite reasonably priced in comparison to the service being offered.
Yet people are not parking there. Instead they choose to line the entrance to the arrivals lanes and the adjacent roads. I’ve lost count of the number of times I see police squad cars asking these people to move along. These cars are not your ‘old bangers’ but expensive four-wheel drives and saloons with exotic badges and marques.
Is it too much to ask that they pay BD1 for an hour of comfortable parking and wait in the cool terminal building while their near and dear ones make their way to them?
Instead, they are creating a hazard on the highway not to mention the eyesore and pollution created by revving engines.
The government has spent and procured around $1.1 billion on the new airport and it’s the duty of every citizen and resident to contribute to its success by using its facilities as intended.
People will pay hundreds of dinars for a good meal but baulk at the prospect of paying a few dinars for parking.
This mindset has to change.
