A HOUSEMAID chewed off part of her roommate’s thumb in a vicious attack for taking ‘too long’ to open their apartment door after a night out celebrating at a birthday party, a court heard.
The 28-year-old Ethiopian appeared at the High Criminal Court yesterday where she denied assault and causing a permanent disability.
She is said to have carried out the crazed attack at a labour accommodation in Manama on March 12.
The gruesome details were recorded in court documents including how the defendant’s mouth was full of her victim’s blood.
Her victim, a 26-year-old fellow national, described how she screamed in pain as she unsuccessfully searched for part of her missing thumb.
“I was sleeping at 6am on March 12 when I heard loud knocking on the apartment’s door,” claimed the victim, who also works as a housemaid at the same house of her alleged assailant, in her statement to prosecutors as she recounted her ordeal.
“She had been out at a birthday party and I was sleeping when she woke me up. I was surprised because she had a copy of the key but I then looked for my key to open the door for her.”
The victim then described how she was dragged across the ground by the hair. “She attacked me for being late to open the door,” the victim alleged.
“She pushed me to the ground and pulled me by my hair before I felt pain in my left hand. She bit my thumb and would not let go for five minutes.
“We went out of the apartment and I screamed for help before a Bahraini man helped me. I then realised that part of my thumb was missing and my blood was in the defendant’s mouth and all over the ground. I could not find my thumb.”
A Bahraini man told the court how he rushed to help before he spotted the defendant chewing and spitting out part of the victim’s thumb.
“I could not believe my eyes,” the 24-year-old Bahraini told prosecutors. “I saw the victim’s thumb in the defendant’s mouth and I took her to hospital. The victim’s blood was splattered everywhere.”
The trial has been adjourned until Wednesday for review.
