A TERRORIST jailed for 15 years for plotting attacks and assassinations across the country has lost his final appeal, following a retrial.
The 30-year-old was among 10 Bahrainis sentenced by the High Criminal Court in November 2013 after a four-month trial. They were accused of forming a terrorist group under the name of Jaish Al Imam (Army of Imam), conspiring with Iran to target key sites and assassinate high-ranking policemen and public figures.
Four of them were jailed for life while six others including the 30-year-old were jailed for 15 years each.
All the 10 defendants filed an appeal at the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court, which upheld their sentences in May 2015.
A final appeal was lodged at the Cassation Court in April last year, which upheld the original sentences for nine of them. However, it ordered a retrial for the 30-year-old because he was not officially informed about the case. The defendant was jailed for 15 years by the Supreme Criminal Appeals Court.
Instructions
A final appeal at the Cassation Court was kicked out yesterday.
“The defendants were waiting for instructions from Iran to carry out attacks using light and medium weapons and homemade explosives,” read the final appeal ruling.
“The cell was run from Iran by ‘Abu Nasser’, a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) who pumped $80,000 into the group.
“The cell members were trained in camps operated by the IRGC in Iran, and sites belonging to Hizbollah in Karbala and Baghdad.
Fourteen others were initially implicated in the case but were cleared by the High Criminal Court in 2013 due to lack of evidence.
The GDN previously reported that the cell planned to target the Interior Ministry, Bahrain International Airport, Bahrain International Circuit, the US Navy base in Juffair, the BDF, Shaikh Isa Air Base and other key sites.
