Bahraini Ali Badr Qureinis won the bronze medal in the Sharjah Qualification Tournament for the Hangzhou Asian Para Games 2022.
A total of 46 male and female athletes from 11 Asian countries – Bahrain, India, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand and Uzbekistan – are taking part in the tournament.
Qureinis is the first Bahraini para athlete to clinch a medal at the Asian level in martial arts and enter the international classification in para taekwondo. He is also the only Arab to take the podium in the tournament so far.
The medal gives him the chance to qualify for the Asian Para Games in China, which will, for the first time, witness the introduction of taekwondo in the para games.
Qureinis beat the top-ranked playfrom India on points. He lost in the semi-final to an Uzbek, who took the silver. A player from Kazakhstan won the gold medal.
